A bunch of us went to the coast to Port Aransas in June for some deep sea fishing. What a lot of fun. Check out the DSA Facebook page for photos . We brought instruments and played our songs at a dinner on Saturday night that was streamed to Facebook live. Harry put it on youtube for us. Who could ask for more. DSA's open mic is there every 4th Thursday and streams to Facebook. Also performing were Guitar George Longus, Scott Brooks, Bill Martin, John Mason, Bob Barraza and Allen Larson. https://www.facebook.com/104739376244963/videos/1397111320645421
EVENTS - Quick look events page: https://dallassongwriters.blogspot.com
The 2021 Hall of Fame ceremony was held on Saturday April 17 virtually on Zoom and streamed live to Facebook. We were so lucky to have John Ford Coley join is from Nashville and perform his hits. It was truly a wonderful experience. He is such a great guy. Gregg A Smith also joined us to perform and accept his award. There were over 20 performers covering songs by our inductees. I hope you will take some time to watch it on our Youtube Channel and please subscribe.
Six years ago we began to honor famous singer/songwriters with roots in the Dallas/Fort Worth area through an induction into the Dallas Songwriters Association Hall of Fame. In the previous years we have honored legends such as T-Bone Walker, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Freddie King, Trini Lopez, Sam Samudo (Sam the Sham), Cindy Walker, Gus Levine, Al Johnson, Bruce Channel, Jerry Lynn Williams, Gary Nicholson, Delbert McClinton, the Nightcaps, Larry Henley, Steve Miller, Boz Scaggs, Stephen Stills, and Rod Phelps.
This years honorees included England Dan Seals and John Ford Coley, Janie Fricke, Steve Weinberg, John Denver, and Gregg A Smith. The DSA's initiative this year was to encourage young aspiring musicians to celebrate our legends with their performances of songs made famous by our inductees. We reached out to the local music schools and asked for auditions at each school for the honor to perform. The show is also archived on our Youtube channel.
For more information about our program and inductees, go to the Hall of Fame website: https://dallassongwritershalloffame.blogspot.comhttps://dallas-songwriters-association.square.site/product/donate-to-dallas-songwriters-hall-of-fame/27?cs=true&cst=custom
We still count on you for support with your membership and donations. But most of all we want you to take advantage of the educational opportunities and participate. Your generosity keeps our organization going. Just go to www.dallassongwriters.org and click on the donation link.
Stay at home and stay safe.
Songcerely,

2. DSA MEETINGS - http://dsameetings.blogspot.com
Date: Thursday, July 1
EXTREME CO-WRITES
This months meeting will feature an "Extreme Co-Writing" session, a practical exercise that involves attendees in the art of co-writing and is always educational and entertaining! We have picked a famous Beatle song that we will use to re-write words and changes in the melody and style in order to come up with a brand-new song! "Can't Buy Me Love" is basically a chorus/verse structure that will be easy and fun to work with, so be thinking about possible hooks and melodies. Here is the song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srwxJUXPHvE

What’s really worth remembering about 1971’s historic year in music
“We were creating the 21st century in 1971.” This sound bite from an out-of-context David Bowie interview plays during the opening credits of Apple TV+’s new documentary 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. With hours of rare archival footage woven together into a novel structure, 1971 attempts to walk us through a turbulent year in American history and show how the (many) classic albums of 1971 shaped today’s world. – by Brady Gerber / Vulture
MUSIC BUSINESSWhat a Publicist Does and Does Not Do for an Artist
By Angela Mastrogiacomo (Flypaper)
You’ve heard the words “PR” and “publicist” thrown around a lot but if you’re honest, you’re not really sure what that means or what they did. Well, you’re not alone. Actually, most people have no idea what this means — including my parents for the first two years after I became a publicist myself (shrugs).

RECORDINGNew interview with Jimmy Iovine on producing records
“I wouldn’t have known where to begin without [a history as a producer], because my strength wasn’t in business. My strength was that I knew what really went into making a record, and I had respect for it. “That respect determined the way I looked at artists. I just basically used my instincts and my instincts were based on that. This is not about you. That was the biggest lesson that I ever learned in music. This is about the artist. And it’s about the music. It’s not about you. – by Dave Roberts / Music Business Worldwide
