SONGWRITERS NOTES E-NEWS #209 JULY / AUGUST 2019

Hello Songwriter,
Finally, our busy calendar slowed down a little, back into our regular routine for the summer. On Thursday, June 20th, Ian Dickson and Harry Hewlett received an appreciation award for their service managing the City Line Courtyard stage at the Wildflower Festival. The awards was given at the volunteer party at City Hall. Below is Ian and Harry with Mayor Paul Voelker.

We had a great showing at the Monday Meetup again this month. A number of members and visitors shared their songs.

At our first Thursday Meeting, Jana Standfield entertained us with her songs and songwriting tales. For the past 15 years, Jana has made her living as a Keynote speaker at conferences and corporate events. Missed the meeting? Here's the facebook video
Learn more about Jana: https://www.janastanfield.com/about-jana/.

We had over 45 people attending at the Opening Bell showcase on the 2nd Wednesday. Featured this month were Johnny Cromer, Jeff and Julie Cater, Paul Zander, Lance French, Joe Milton and Craig Langford.

Allen Larson hosted for Harry at Dunn Brothers for the Third Thursday Open Mic so that Harry could get his award.  It was a fun evening with a full line up.

Our attendance at Love and War keeps growing. Performers who put on a great show were Michael Brandenberger, Cat McGee, John Mason, Aaron Shook, Harry Hewlett.
You can find videos on each of these performers from our showcases and open mics on our facebook page in videos.

For many, the fact that the success of a song lyric tends to hinge upon on its accompanying music, the voices that sing it and the performance itself means that it cannot be considered poetry. Yet before the written word, poetry was performed and passed on through song. The thing that sets poetry apart from prose is that its impact depends on a musicality in language and rhythm, much like a song lyric. However you see it, there are many musicians who are poets in their fans’ eyes, and their song lyrics are taken seriously todaystudied in classrooms and published as annotated, hardback collections. – by Jamie Atkins / UDiscoverMusic

n the 1950s, the experimental composer John Cage began to explore what would happen if some parts of a musical composition were left to chance. Music-writing, as he saw it, was doused in ego—like an artist's self-portrait—and he imagined a new form that could essentially compose itself.
