SONGWRITERS NOTES E-NEWS #204 February 2019

Hello Songwriter,

I hope this newsletter finds you writing love songs.

Exciting things are happening this month. We have added two new showcases for our members. On Wednesday, February 13, we begin our 2nd Wednesday monthly showcase at Opening Bell Coffee at South Side on Lamar. See below for performers and times.

On Thursday, February 28, we begin our 4th Thursday monthly showcase at Love and War in Plano.

In January, we had a full house at the Dunn Brothers open mic in Addison. Come early to sign up and play a couple of songs. Each month we discover new talent at this venue and gather to share our songs with our old friends. If you are a new member and want to play our showcase venues, this is the place to display your talent and get on the list.

Other showcases this spring will be the Deep Ellum and Wildflower Festivals, plus our Hall of Fame.

Our Hall of Fame is April 20th, at Sons of Hermann Hall DSA will be inducting Stephen Stills, Steve Miller, Boz Scaggs, Larry Henley and Rod Phelps. Check out the Dallas Songwriters Hall of Fame website. We have a casting call for DSA members and students to perform songs by our inductee for the program this year. To be considered for performing on the show, send your video or mp3 links of the song you wish to perform to Harry Hewlett.

Our regular DSA monthly events:
* the Monthly Meeting, 1st Thursday, Guest Speaker, Jon Christopher Davis, and song critiques
Guitar Pull, 1st Monday, at Half Price Books on NWH in Dallas - Harry Hewlett hosts; and
* the 3rd Thursday Open Mic at Dunn Brothers Coffee in Addison.
Our Lyric contest will maintain it's quarterly deadlines: March, June, September, December.
Song Contest opens in June.

We still count on you for support with your membership and donations. But most of all we want you to take advantage of the educational opportunities and participate.
There is still a chance to donate for the new year. Your generosity keeps our organization going. Just go to www.dallassongwriters.org and click on the donation link.

Thanks to Paul Zander, Jon Jaggers, Bobby Montgomery, Ginger Stanoia, Kenneth Shoemaker, and Kristi Myers for their recent contributions to our fall fundraiser. Other contributors include Ireland, Jon Jaggers, Bill Kapac, Rio King, Mimi Balkey, Suzi Morse, and Jared LoStrato. Go to this link: https://squareup.com/store/dallas-songwriters-association

Thanks to Harry Hewlett you can view some of our open mics and guest speakers in a live stream on Facebook? See guest our guest speakers, and past Angela's showcases. Can't make it? Then tune into Facebook/dallassongwriters. Want to be on our facebook streams? Show up and perform.

Songcerely,
Barbe

DSA MEETINGS - http://dsameetings.blogspot.com

Songwriter Jon Christopher Davis is Guest Speaker for Thursday, Feb 7th , at Half Brice Books.
JCD’s songs have been covered by Dolly Parton, Hal Ketchum, Timothy B. Schmit of the Eagles, Billy Ray Cyrus, Sherrie Austin, Rodney Atkins, Tammy Cochran and several indie artists. “Little Bird,” recorded by Sherrie Austin, peaked at number 4 on Billboard’s Top Country Singles Sales Chart. His music and raspy voice are often licensed for television.
JCD’s recorded for Warner Brothers, Sony and MCA Records, supplied background vocals on albums for Arista and Curb Records, and has been featured on/in ABC, CBS, FOX, CMT, the Style Network, Pentagon Network, CW Network, Oxygen Channel, USA Today, Billboard Magazine, Texas Highways and the Washington Post. USA Today called “The Bottom Line” “one of the most intriguing tracks from the past, present and near future.”
His discography includes work with Vince Gill, Radney Foster, Rodney Crowell, Steve Lukather (Toto), Stan Lynch (The Heartbreakers), Dann Huff (Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban) and David Z (Prince, Jonny Lang).
JCD’s shared the concert stage with Train, Daughtry, The Roots (Jimmy Fallon’s house band), Lyle Lovett, Jack Ingram, Radney Foster, Rodney Crowell, Hal Ketchum, Michael McDonald, Eddie Money, Poco, Pure Prairie League, Restless Heart, Kansas, REO Speedwagon and performed twice for President George W. Bush.
In 2004, his song, “Lone Star Attitude,” stayed on the Texas Music Chart for 6 months. In 2006, the album featuring “LSA” was picked up for national distribution by Palo Duro Records. “LSA” has since transitioned into a trademarked brand for the singer/songwriter (Lone Star Attitude® apparel stores at DFW International Airport and LSA Burger Co. in Denton, TX).
In 2009, JCD released “Demos From the Vault (1999-2009),” a 2-disk collection that includes the moving military tribute with Deryl Dodd, “The Boy I Left Behind,” which became the theme song for The American Fallen Soldiers Project. In 2010, JCD was awarded Song of the Year by the American Cancer Society for Relay For Life. In 2012, he was a featured artist on the critically acclaimed television show, Troubadour TX. In 2014, he put out “Last Night’s Dinner Party.” In 2018, he released the album, New Wind Blowing, featuring the singles, “Vinyl Revival,” “Sisters Do” and “Boom Box.”
