Songwriters Notes E-News #198 May 2018

Hello Songwriter,

Wow the Dallas International Guitar Show, guitarshow.com, is happening this weekend and I'm sitting in front of the computer writing this newsletter, darn. I've got to finish and get out there to Market Hall.  I've been going since the first one and I think about it's founder Charley Wirz, who is the Charley of Charley's Guitar Shop and my very good friend whom I miss dearly. This event is in it's 41st year. Guitar great Jimmy Wallace now runs the event. It's a huge guitar buy, sell and trade market and a festival with 4 stages. It's the best entertainment value this weekend. You can find DSA at booth 174. Go!

Our monthly meeting features guest speaker, Aaron Shook on music distribution, Monday, May 7th at Half Price Books. See details below under Monthly Meeting.

We're gearing up for the Dallas Songwriters City Line Stage at the Wildflower Festival in May 18 - 21. Finalists from the Wildflower Performing Songwriter Contest and DSA Members will be performing on the stage.

Our Songwriter Spotlight stage at the Deep Ellum Arts Festival the weekend of April 6 - 8 at Sons of Hermann Hall was a great success. It was cold that weekend and folks came into the hall to warm up. Harry Hewlett did a great job of booking, managing and running sound for the stage. DSA VP Bobby Dallas was on hand to help out the entire weekend. Here are the videos that Harry posted on facebook.

Other regular DSA monthly events are the open mics on the  3rd Thursdays and 1st Monday.

Our Hall of Fame was lot's of fun. We love our new location, Love and War in Plano. I owe a big thanks to Alexis Tapp and Jessica Ewy for stepping in and adding super background vocals on some of the songs I sang. They were such a big addition and so wonderful, without any opportunity for rehearsal! Also, my all time favorite musician, Joe Milton, who is so talented, playing numerous instruments, but in this case, the harmonica. Felt we really needed one on "Hey Baby" and the Delbert songs.  Joe has a great studio, JoMusik, and is a great producer. Very multi-talented. Meet him at our monthly meetings where he will critique your song. Big thanks go out to the program director, Bobby Montgomery, who was the big ramrod of the event! At a boy! We caught Rio King and his gal on the dance floor while the band played a set of blues after the program.

Winners of the BW Stevenson contest at Poor David's were Raymond Coffman, Andrew Holmes, Justion Cashion. There was a girl power panel of judges including yours truly, and Helene Cronin, plus Annie Benjamin, last years winner. All of us are DSA alumni.  For more info about the contest and Poor Davids, see their website: http://poordavidspub.com/Comp.htm

Hey, I just found out about a songwriting workshop and festival in Lafayette, LA on May the 22nd - 25th. It's a great opportunity for participants to co-write and perform with renowned songwriters. See the workshops section below for more details. I'm planning to go.

Coming in June is the Madison Music Conference, In Between The Waves, the 15th -16th produced by Broadjam CEO Roy Elkins. http://btwmadison.com/  There will be a group of us going there. Are you interested?

Thanks to Paul Zander, Jon Jaggers, Bobby Montgomery, Ginger Stanoia, Kenneth Shoemaker, and Kristi Myers for their recent contributions to our fall fundraiser. Other contributors include Ireland, Jon Jaggers, Bill Kapac, Rio King, Mimi Balkey, Suzi Morse, and Jared LoStrato. There is still time to donate. Go to this link: https://dallassongwriters.org/shop/donation/

Did you know we are live streaming on Facebook? Thanks to Harry Hewlett you can view some of our open mics and guest speakers in a live stream on Facebook? See guest our guest speakers, and past Angela's showcases. Can't make it? Then tune into Facebook/dallassongwriters. Want to be on our facebook streams? Show up and perform.

Songcerely,
Barbe
