SONGWRITERS NOTES ISSUE #218 MAY 2020

Hello Songwriter,

Thought about writing a song titled, Stay at Home", but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I've already heard that phrase too much. I'm so grateful to Harry Hewlett for conducting our virtual meetings, workshops and showcases via Zoom. Thanks to Harry my sanity is still in tack. Yes, DSA has gone global and virtual in order to continue to provide programing for our members. No matter where you are in the world, you can join ours meetings, open mics and showcases. So jump into the Texas music scene, and take advantage of these new opportunities anywhere in the world and join us for some virtual fun and learning opportunities.  https://dallassongwriters.org/join-dsa/

I saw this on Fox 4 channel just today. The song is written and sung by Gary Burr. I met Gary many years ago in Sony Tree studios in Nashville. He's written tons of hits.

Our Annual International Songwriting Contest, which offers more than $5,000 in prizes with winners in 8 categories will kick off on June 1.   In 2019, we had entries and winners from Iceland, Sweden, the UK, and all over the United States. https://dsasongcontest.blogspot.com

This year we will include our new Young Songwriters Song Contest for 18 and under which will open for entries on June 1.

In addition to our International Songwriting Contest, members can enter the Quarterly Lyric Contest https://www.facebook.com/DSALyricContest/, and monthly song critiques.  The DSA currently offers members 2 virtual workshops each month, 2 virtual showcases, a virtual open mic, as well as special events.  https://www.facebook.com/dallassongwriters/

This year, our annual DSA Hall of Fame Event, which honors outstanding songwriters with North Texas ties, has been postponed until Sep 19, 2020.  Honorees will include John Denver, England Dan and John Ford Coley, Janie Fricke, and Gregg A. Smith.  Live performances by DSA Rising Star Students, DSA Members, and the BYO Musicians Network will be broadcast LIVE to a global audience.

Live performances and camaraderie with fellow songwriters make up the soul of DSA.  Last months events have shown us that reaching out to the global community is hugely important to our mission to promote the craft of songwriting, provide realistic, educational opportunities to better navigate the music industry, and to provide exclusive performance opportunities, both LIVE and VIRTUAL.  For a quick look at our virtual events this month we have provided an events list at

To fulfill our mission, the Dallas Songwriters Association invites guest speakers to address our virtual audience for now, and to join our monthly workshops in the future.  These workshops offer educational information from accomplished songwriters and industry professionals, everything from jingle writing, to do it yourself videos, to the new economics of the music industry.  If you would like to conduct a workshop, please contact: info@dallassongwriters.org.

DSA is proud to announce that this years Grand Prize Casio Privia Keyboard is the new PX-S1000. This new electronic keyboard sounds and feels like a real piano and it is lighter weight than other keyboards with the same features. This “world’s slimmest digital piano” weighs in at just 24.7 pounds. The back panel includes a USB port, an audio (stereo mini-jack) port,  and two 1/4 inch outputs, (stereo and mono). The Privia PX-S1000 contains 18 different "bread and butter" sounds, including numerous acoustic pianos, Rhodes and Wurlitzer-type electric pianos, vibes, string patches, organs, harpsichord, and acoustic bass. You can also layer and split these sounds.

Every working pianist in a metropolitan area where space and portability are paramount should try Casio's Privia PX-S1000 for themselves. From its realistic piano sound and touch, to its extreme portability and modern connectivity it’s truly a marvel.

A new brain-imaging study has studied the brain activity of jazz guitarists during improvisation to show that creativity is, in fact, driven primarily by the right hemisphere in musicians who are comparatively inexperienced at improvisation. However, musicians who are highly experienced at improvisation rely primarily on their left hemisphere.

"While we're practicing social distancing, nothing can bring us together like the power of music," Michael Sticka, President of the Grammy Museum, said. "Our doors may be closed, our mission is not," Sticka said. "So the Grammy Museum was able to, almost within a 48-hour period, pivot and create a digital museum. The new Grammy Museum at Home portal features new artist public programs, education and virtual exhibits. The museum will also be surfacing content which has never been released before… And it's entirely free."

There is no segment of the music industry that hasn’t been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic on some way over the past several weeks. Music tours have ground to a halt as venues large and small have shuttered in response to state ordinances, touring agencies have furloughed workers, and artist managers have scrambled to revamp promotional plans for their artists’ album releases. For Nashville’s close-knit songwriting and music publishing community, the stay-at-home ordinances have meant songwriters and music publishers alike have been sheltering in place at their homes. The sudden shift has led music publishers and songwriters to turn to digital platforms to keep their businesses moving forward.

RECORDING

If you work at an after-school music program, maybe this dilemma will sound familiar: Your students want to learn how to make music, but maybe not the kind they find in their school's classical, marching band, or choral curricula. The Music & Youth Initiative came up with a cost-effective way to get powerful, contemporary music-making tools into the hands of students. The battery-powered workstation the group devised has everything students need to create modern pop, hip-hop, R&B, or other current music, and it will cost just about $1,000 total.

IN MEMORIAM

By Andy Greene (Rolling Stone)
Grammy-winning mellifluous vocalist behind “Lean on Me,” “Lovely Day,” and “Ain’t No Sunshine” succumbs to heart complications. The three-time Grammy winner released just eight albums before walking away from the spotlight in 1985, but he left an incredible mark on the music community and the world at large.

Ellis Louis Marsalis Jr. was born on Nov. 14, 1934. He graduated from Dillard University in New Orleans with a B.A. in music education, and that was the field to which he devoted himself. Despite playing with such notable jazz musicians as Cannonball and Nat Adderley, he was most proud of his work as an educator. His music students included Terence Blanchard, Donald Harrison, Harry Connick Jr. and four of his sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason Marsalis.

A master of the subtle art of rhythm guitar as well as a gifted soloist, Mr. Pizzarelli was sought after for recording sessions in the 1950s and ’60s and can be heard on hundreds of records in various genres, although he was often uncredited. He also toured with Benny Goodman and was a longtime member of the “Tonight Show” orchestra. But he was little known to all but the most knowledgeable jazz fans until he was in his 40s. He became a mainstay of the New York jazz scene, often performing with his celebrated son John.

Aspects like body language and in-room chemistry are difficult to translate during remote collaboration sessions, not to mention the hurdles of technology. But despite its challenges, remote music collaboration has resulted in creative work that’s gone on to change the world. With patience and planning, you’ll be able to make your long-distance musical collaborations productive and exciting. Here are five tips to help...
