SONGWRITERS NOTES E-NEW #208 JUNE 2019

Hello Songwriter,

The month of May has been another busy month.  We started out the first weekend at the Dallas International Guitar Show. Here is Bobby Montgomery and Ken Duren talking with a prospective member at the DSA booth at the show.  Thanks to Bobby , Ken, Ben Halim, Harry Hewlett, Jeff and Julie Cater, Craig Langford, Allen Larson, Michael Franceus and Lance French for being our ambassadors.  The show is not only a market to buy and sell guitars, but also a great music festival with 4 stages throughout the weekend. We had lots of fun and talked with lots of writers and players.

We had a great showing at the Monday Meetup. Jana Stanfield enlightened us with her songwriting tips which she will expound on at our next DSA monthly workshop.

At our first Thursday Meeting, Ed Bernet entertained us with Dallas music tales from the past. Here's a video: https://www.facebook.com/dallassongwriters/videos/566561653852850/

We filled the room at the Opening Bell showcase on the 2nd Wednesday with over 40 people attending. Featured this month were Don Wall, Ricky Gene Wright, Aaron Shook, Craig St. Clair, Stephen Valenzuela.

Performers who dropped in at Dunn Brothers for the Third Thursday Open Mic were Harry Hewlett, Rio King, Caera Thornton, Jeff & Julie Cater, Bill Martin, Chris Glass, Allen Larson, Barbe McMillen, & Bobby Dallas!

Our attendance at Love and War keeps growing, with over 50 people showing up this month. Performers who put on a great show were Stephen Houpt, John Jaggers, Jeri Alice, Ireland, Craig Langford and Harry Hewlett.

You can find videos on each of these performers from our showcases and open mics on our facebook page in videos.

Poor Davids BW Stevenson Contest concluded in May with a show of area songwriters competing among the finalists. I was lucky to be one of the judges along with Ed Beaver and Brett Dillion. Congrats to the winner, Scott Fant and the runner up, Rick Babb.

Our big event in May is managing and performing on the City Line Courtyard Stage at the Wildflower Festival on the third weekend. Brando booked the incredible talent and volunteers. Ian and Harry did a super job as always managing the stage and providing the sound. Bobby Montgomery helped load in and out and set up and tear down. I was lucky enough to attend the super informative songwriting workshop there on Friday with Tom Kimmel. My performance time was wiped out because of the bad weather on Saturday, but we still had great fun.

Our regular DSA monthly events:
* the Monthly Meeting, 1st Thursday, Guest Speaker, Jana Stanfield
* Songwriter Meetup, 1st Monday, at Half Price Books on NWH in Dallas - Harry Hewlett hosts;
* the 3rd Thursday Open Mic at Dunn Brothers Coffee in Addison hosted by Harry.
* the 2nd Wednesday Showcase at Opening Bell in South Side hosted by Craig Langford
* the 4th Thursday Showcase at Love and War in Texas in Plano hosted by Rickey Gene Wright.
Our Lyric Contest will maintain it's quarterly deadlines: March, June, September, December.
Song Contest opens sometime in June.

We have a new book review by Allan Larson of the Terry Jennings book about his father Waylon Jennings. Read it here: https://dsabookstore.blogspot.com

We still count on you for support with your membership and donations. But most of all we want you to take advantage of the educational opportunities and participate.
There is still a chance to donate for the new year. Your generosity keeps our organization going. Just go to www.dallassongwriters.org and click on the donation link.

Thanks to Paul Zander, Jon Jaggers, Bobby Montgomery, Ginger Stanoia, Kenneth Shoemaker, and Kristi Myers for their recent contributions to our fall fundraiser. Other contributors include Ireland, Jon Jaggers, Bill Kapac, Rio King, Mimi Balkey, Suzi Morse, and Jared LoStrato. Go to this link: https://squareup.com/store/dallas-songwriters-association

Thanks to Harry Hewlett you can view some of our open mics and guest speakers in a live stream on Facebook? See guest our guest speakers, and past Angela's showcases. Can't make it? Then tune into Facebook/dallassongwriters. Want to be on our facebook streams? Show up and perform.

No one needs a neuroscientist to explain that manipulating the rhythms, tonalities and intensities of a melody can trigger strong emotions. In fact, composers of symphonies, rock / pop music, soundtracks and TV ads all know how to tune into the mood of their audience through musical notes and cadences that can alternate between expressions of disparate feelings: from sadness to depression, to feelings of euphoria, joy and joviality. But neuroscientists may have something to say about how music causes emotional effects in the depths of the human brain. Continue Reading f5ec743b4e5e4c2c9587db8c6ec80b4d.gif
