DSA E-News #114, Dec. 2010

Hello Songwriter,

Wow, it's December already. The past two Mondays my songwiting students from Collin College gave a concert at the Allen Library. They were great! You can view video clips on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/commercialmusic .  The final class concert is next Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Escape Coffee in Allen. The poetry class is joining us for song/poem slam.

Dallas Songwriters is on Facebook. Go on Facebook and LIKE us.

Our Christmas party will be on Dec. 14. There will be ham, beans, veggies and fruit. We have a special program planned that will be lots of fun.

Other regularly scheduled monthly events are SongSwaps on 6th and 20th and Open Mic on the 23rd.

Not a DSA member? Then you've missed the musings via our member yahoo group of our DSA Prez, Buck Morgan. Catch up with what's going on here: http://dsaprezsez.blogspot.com/

I wish you a warm and bright holiday season and ask you to please remember DSA in your end of the year charitable giving.

Giving Rocks!

While it never hurts to remind you that DSA is a non-profit organization (and so
your contributions are tax-deductible) -  this year it means so much more. We're proud to be celebrating our 20th Anniversary as a non-profit. DSA has been an organized songwriter group since 1985 and became a non-profit in 1990.

Your gift enables us to meet our mission:
MISSION STATEMENT

We exist to enhance the overall personal growth and professionalism of our members through the following means:

• Provide a practical and realistic orientation for songwriters/artists on common standards and expectations of the music industry.
• Sharpen required competencies for excelling in the song writing profession.
• Serve as a forum for networking among peers and with industry experts to generate career opportunities.
• Serve as a non-political advocate for songwriters and performers in a liaison with peer organizations throughout the country.

Our programs created to meet our mission goals are: a monthly newsletter, workshops, critique sessions, showcases, contests, networking opportunities and community service.
If you like what we do, and want to help us keep doing it, please make a contribution today. Gifts of all sizes are meaningful and appreciated.

Donations are welcome year round, but we are careful not to knock on your door too often.  We won’t be doing an appeal like this again until next December.

Now- back to your regularly scheduled newsletter!
Happy Holidays

Stephen Sondheim Talks To Frank Rich About 'Glee' And What's Next
NPR -- As part of
The New York Times' Times Talk series, Frank Rich sat down for a public, ninety minute chat with Stephen Sondheim. ... Sondheim's been opening up to everyone this year. In the spring, he gave candid video interviews that were integrated into the Broadway revue Sondheim on Sondheim, and he just published Finishing the Hat, a collection of lyrics and anecdotes that finds him dishing on everyone from his ninth grade Latin teacher to Oscar Hammerstein. The Times Talk was just as meaty.

By Marc Myers -- To illustrate the beat he invented in 1949—the beat that became rock 'n' roll—Fats Domino placed his fingers on the back of my hand. Using me as his keyboard, the legendary pianist tapped out his famed triplets. "Feel it?" he asked, a cherubic smile spreading across his face. "It's all in the 1, 2, 3."
