Amazon, Apple & The Price Of Music

Ever since Amazon began selling digital music and offering lower prices than rival Apple, the suspicion by many iTunes fans is that the music industry was in cahoots with Amazon. In the comments section of our scoop Monday on Apple's MacWorld announcement that it was doing away with copy-protection software and changing its pricing policy, many iTunes fans asserted the often repeated allegation that the four largest recording companies were giving Amazon a price break.

Not so, according to two music industry insiders with knowledge of the negotiations.

DSA E-News #89 November 2008

DSA SPECIAL EVENT FUNDRAISER

Bring your family and friends to the old Square in McKinney, Texas. Help us fill all the seats of the McKinney Performing Arts Center on Nov. 9th for the Crossroads Benefit Concert headlining the fabulous new grass band, Beatlegras. One of the band members is Milo Deering, a session players that has played on many DSA members albums, including LeAnn Rhimes' first.

MUSIC DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS.

Kindly rush, do not walk, to the following link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wqs2W0ORXk&eurl=http://www.pegasusnews.com/bands/beatlegras/
[NOTE: Be advised, the brief animation antics at the front of the
video quickly evolve into live performance footage of Beatlegras.]

Lean more about the band at http://www.beatlegras.com/

Also, the McKinney Performing Arts center is a WONDERFUL VENUE, like a fine wooden instrument that has aged, for a great sound. The historic building also has a great sound SYSTEM. Did you know that it was the old courthouse? It reminds me of the courtroom in the movie "To Kill A Mockingbird".

Here is a note from DSA Director Mary Guthire about the event.

Just a note here to encourage you to support DSA in its brand-new fundraiser, the big event happening on Sunday, Nov. 9 inside the gorgeous McKinney Performing Arts Center, located on McKinney's historic downtown square.

Why support the event? Because it will help fund your DSA programs. Do you look forward to workshops, seminars, contests, open mics? Do you enjoy networking with other DSA members via the Yahoo group, at Song Swap and more? Then step on up and let's go hear some fantastic music together on Nov. 9 in McKinney and keep this good thing going!

Headliner is internationally acclaimed Beatlegras, known for their original acoustic takes on Beatles music. Supporting that are five -- count 'em -- five local woman artists who will present a smashing day of pop, rock, roots, Latin and more: Lisa Mickelson, Jeanie Sliva, Lisa Apple, Tania Cordobes and Annie Cornelius (performance times below). And did we mention the Silent Auction yet? I heard there's even a $100 wine tasting -- come check it all out.

Tickets are $21 each in advance, and benefit both the Dallas Songwriters Association and the Crossroads Family Services, a nonprofit that helps women and families via education, intervention, and crisis counseling. It's a wonderful partnership, and you get to help two worthy organizations at once!

Here's how to get tickets:

Event tickets may be purchased online at www.mckinneyperformingartscenter.org or by calling (214) 544-4630 Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The cost for a ticket, which includes access to all performances and events, is $21. Additional fees apply to phone and online purchases. Or, you can probably snag a ticket from DSA President Steve Sullivan himself at $21 flat.

Here's the other details:

The event begins at 2:00 p.m. with local singer songwriter artists Lisa Apple; 2:30 Jeanie Sliva; 3:00 Lisa Mickelson; 3:30 Tania Cordobés; and 4:30 Annie Cornelius performing pop, folk, and Latin tunes. Internationally famous concert headliner, BEATLEGRAS, (www.beatlegras.com) will perform from 5:00-7:00 p.m. The silent auction and wine tasting will also take place from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the basement Gallery Room.

If you have other questions, you might want to post them to DSA President Steve Sullivan - this has become a labor of love for him, and he's the man with the answers. That said, thanks, Steve, for your efforts to raise funds for DSA -- we will all benefit!

See you in McKinney --
Thanks,
Mary Guthrie
