DSA E-NEWS: SONGWRITERS NOTES #163 MARCH 2015

Hello Songwriter,

Your directors are working hard planning some educational events for you. We've a couple of workshops planned this spring, along with some showcase ops for Wildflower and Arts Week.

Our Second Tuesday Meeting will feature guest speaker, Annie Howe from the local radio station, KNONAnnie, who has been involved with the station for many years, will enlighten us on the ins and out radio airplay. See #2 below.

The worshop and performance with The Waymores at the MCM Grand in Lewisville was absolutely the best!  Don Henry, Sally Barris and Tom Kimmell each took time to introduce themselves, talk about their background and present an important element of songwriting, demonstrating an example from one of their own songs. After the introductions, the group began commenting on songs presented live by each registrant. Everyone was able to learn from the comments.

I was sad not to be able to take in Folk Alliance in Kansas City, however, I did try to tune into KC Cafe Radio without success. Apparently, the live showcase stream was so popular that the servers could not handle all the hits. Hopefully, they will try again next year with more success.

I'm headed down to SXSW next week for one day only, Thursday. Anyone up for commuting together? I have a number of things scheduled for the day, but most important is the Texas Chapter of the Recording Academy's Membership Meeting. It's very inconvenient that SXSW is not aligned with Spring Break this year. Sure limits my ability to take in the week, because of teaching duties at Collin College.

BW Stevenson Song Contest at Poor David's is calling for entries, deadline April 15th. See #10 below.
We are back in the swing of the Second and fourth Sat. Showcases at Angela's. See below for the March line up.

Our regular DSA monthly events remain the same 1st and 3rd Monday SongSwaps and 1st and 3rd Thursday Open Mic. For details, see #2 and #4 below. Some of us like to visit the Poor Davids Pub Open Mic every Monday.

Thanks to our new Lyric Contest Director Dan Roark and DSA Prez Michael Brandenberger, we are caught up with the lyric contest announcement. See the most recent announcements below in #5. Next quarterly deadline is March 31st.

Spring is coming. My irish eyes are smiling. Don't forget to wear green this month!

LUCIA COMNES WINS GRAND PRIZE WITH HER SONG, "NO HIDING PLACE"

“Lucia Comnes is a singer, songwriter, fiddler & guitarist with a ‘singular voice’ (SF Chronicle) and ‘a powerful imagination’ (C. Poling) whose atmospheric roots music crosses genres of Americana, folk, Celtic, bluegrass & alternative.”
Drawing from the past but refreshingly contemporary, Lucia demonstrates that she isn't afraid of taking chances. Her crystal clear voice with a hint of mystery was decried by the San Francisco Chronicle as "singular…. embedded with soul and spirit."  Her fiddling is powerful and full of emotional expression. All these talents and imagination have conbined to create the grand prize winning song, "No Hiding Place." Her... more....... http://dsapress.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

2014 SONGWRITER OF THE YEAR
Bobby Montgomery

John Wayne had it. So did Clint Eastwood. That solid feeling that let’s you know you can count on them.

While Bobby Montgomery, the recently named Dallas Songwriter of the year, may not have Hollywood girth and brawn, he makes up for it in character.

He more than fills the Duke’s boots when you need someone you can count on.

When Bobby found the Dallas Songwriters, he found a home.  He knew there was something valuable here, and things of value need to be cared for. More.....

With the release by the U.S. Copyright Office of its 245-page study, "Copyright and the Music Marketplace," the lines are being drawn in the battle over compensation for music rightsholders in the digital age. The U.S. Copyright Office’s study examines the aging music licensing framework in light of the creation of and invest in music in this century. 'Blurred Lines' Trial Reveals Robin Thicke, Pharrell Made Over $5 Million From Disputed Song

Stevie Wonder on Duke Ellington
By Scott Timberg -- There's been a lot of talk about Mr. Wonder lately, largely because of the recent concerts. It reminds me of what may be my favorite Stevie song, from a record my parents had when I was a kid and which I pretty much wore out. Cool that he is tipping his hat to another piano player. [For a good time, click here and savor a little Stevie.]

NPR -- More than 15 years ago, Roebuck "Pops" Staples started recording his final album with his daughters, Mavis, Cleotha and Yvonne of the gospel-R&B family act The Staple Singers. Pops was ailing, but his voice was strong. In time he became too weak to finish the album, and one day he called Mavis to his sickbed and asked her to play him a rough recording. She left him alone with the music, and when she came back, he smiled and told her, "Mavis, don't lose this." She didn't.

By Terry Hart -- ... in its historical application—as a privilege for the incorporation of expression from an existing work into a new work—courts should look at necessity.
