SONGWRITERS NOTES DSA E-NEWS # 152 MARCH 2014

Hello Songwriter,

Every warmer day brings the promise of spring and Spring Break in Texas means a trip to Austin for SXSW. I'll be traveling down to attend the Grammy Party among many other happenings.

Our Second Tuesday Workshop will feature Pete Miller revealing the Song of The Year 2013 while critiquing the top five. The suspense is killing me. - see #2 below for details.

The SongSwap is coming up at Half Price Books on 1st Monday. Our regular DSA monthly events remain the same 1st and 3rd Monday SongSwaps and 1st and 3rd Thursday Open Mic. For details, see #2 and #4 below. Also we have a regular showcase at House of Blues every last Wednesday of the month and a new open mic christian fellowship in a historic building in Waxahachie, see #4 below. Food is served at 6PM and it goes for a couple of hours.

2-Bit Palomino was wonderful in concert at the MCL Grand. Bill Nash is a true songcrafter. A number of folks attended the workshop earlier in the day.

Dallas Songwriters blooms in spring on two outdoor stages. Steve Sullivan has been working hard to schedule the Deep Ellum Arts Festival stage. We're looking forward to a big three day weekend of original songs on our stage, expecting over 100,000 attendees. You can fly your company's banner on our stage by talking to Steve about a space by email. The opportunity is also available for the Wildflower Festival. For details see this page http://dallassongwriters.blogspot.com/p/advertise.html

ASCAP President and Chairman of the Board, Paul Williams, Responds to Introduction of the "Songwriter Equity Act"
"Our livelihoods as songwriters and composers depend on the income we earn from licensing public performances and reproductions of our works. That's why the songwriting community I represent is so appreciative of the legislation that has been introduced today to address Sections 114(i) and 115 of the US Copyright Act. It will remove one of the artificial barriers that is keeping songwriter compensation below fair market rates and creating a dramatic disparity between the compensation of music copyright holders."

Compulsory Licensing & Chilling Effects
By David Newhoff -- The compulsory license strips one of the fundamental properties of copyright, the right of choice, from the artist, and this is why Steven Tyler and Dina LaPolt were supported with letters from other creators including, Don Henley, Joe Walsh, Sting, Ozzy Osbourne and Mick Fleetwood.

Keeping Fair Use "Fair"
By Frank Cullen -- ...when someone uses the term "fair use" as the basis for taking a copyrighted work without permission or compensation, you would expect that fair-minded people would think it is hardly "fair" for someone to get a free ride on the labors of another. Crime Jazz: Noir-ish Music from '50s Television and Film Crime Dramas

By Xeni Jardin -- In the '50s, a new style of musical score was introduced to movie soundtracks: jazz. Previously, movie music meant sweeping orchestral themes or traditional Broadway-style musicals. But with the growing popularity of bebop and hard bop as the sound of urban cool, studios began latching onto the now beat as a way to make their movies seem gritty or "street."

Fred Armisen's Fake Bands (And Their Real Songs)

By NPR Staff -- A lot of obscure bands want to reach a national audience, and they send their records to NPR. But before chucking the disc, the show's producers noticed a familiar name on it: Fred Armisen.
