DSA E-News Songwriters Notes #147 October 2013

Hello Songwriter,

Finally it has cooled off here in Texas. Lot's of fall activities and the State Fair is in full swing. Fall is the best time in Texas!

The Dallas Songwriters Song Contest winners have been announced. Our Grand Prize Winner is Jay Gallagher from Philadelphia, PA. See #1 below.

Our 2ND TUESDAY MEETING will feature guest speaker Jenni Peal on making a living as a singer songwriter. We've already had our 1st Thursday Open Mic and the SongSwap is coming up at Half Price Books on 1st Monday. Our regular DSA monthly events remain the same 1st and 3rd Monday SongSwaps and 1st and 3rd Thursday Open Mic. For details, see #2 and #4 below. Also we have a regular showcase at House of Blues every last Wednesday of the month. So please mark these regularly occurring dates in your calendar.

DEADLINE: OCT 16TH
ST JUDES is calling all Singer-Songwriters to enter this free contest and gain exposure for their art. Have your songs heard by Nashville producers, songwriters and record label executives and raise money for the children of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. After fan and social media voting, the finalists will perform their original songs on stage on October 25, 2013 at the Arlington Music Hall in Arlington, Texas. The winner of the Songs that Save Songwriter of the Year competition that evening will go on to perform with some of Nashville's most prestigious songwriters at one of Dallas' top events of the year - the Evening Under the Stars event at the Omni Hotel Dallas on October 26, 2013.

* Also, coming up in November - DSA director, Will Brown, is chairing a committee producing a Veterans Day event at Tarrant County College, South Campus, in Fort Worth Texas. It will be a mid-day live music event on November 11 featuring performers who are current or former members of the military. Some veterans from the Psychology and Music departments are working on putting together a backing band that will also cover some of the songs from "Songs From the Soul of Service." If you are a performer who is a veteran or current member of the military and you would like to perform during this event please contact Will.

"How'd you learn to write a song like that?" Townes Van Zandt to Jenni, Jan. 1996, after hearing her song "Two Sisters."

Jenni Mansfield Peal is a songwriter and singer, guitarist, accordionist, and mountain dulcimist. Her experience includes two tours of Northern Ireland, main stage at the Kerrville Folk Festival, numerous original productions and ensembles, and four independent albums. The Mr. Peppermint Show featured Jenni's songs on multiple episodes that were syndicated world-wide for years, and her most recent recording is for children and families: Putting On the Old Folk's Clothes. Jenni was named The Best Folk Song Writer in North Texas by CBS DFW, among four, in October 2010. Original is her newest ensemble, with jazz bass player Mark Wilson and award-winning fiddler Linda Relph.

Former DSA guest speaker and friend, John Bryant, informs me that his group is funding a documentary film on Kickstarter about his group, Stewart Copeland and the creation of a composition for the Dallas Symphony.
