Soul Songwriter Jerry Ragovoy Dead at 80
By Matthew Perpetua -- Jerry Ragovoy, the songwriter behind Sixties soul hits such as "Time Is on My Side," "Piece of My Heart" and "Cry Baby," has died at the age of 80. In 1969, Ragovoy founded the Hit Factory recording studio in New York City, which he later sold in 1975. In that time, he worked as a producer and arranger for a roster of artists including Dionne Warwick and Bonnie Raitt.
What's the difference between emotional content and technical content? Reuniting with his first band causes Ian Moore to reminisce on his early playing style and how the passionate playing of Wilco's Jeff Tweedy contrasts the sterile acrobatics of more technically adept players. Read more…

MUSIC BUSINESS
Kickstarter Hits 10,000 Funded Projects
SoundCtrl -- Crowdfunding site, Kickstarter, is used by everyone from musicians to social energy technologists. Here's some stats that give a pretty solid snapshot of where they're at... [Reprise: Is Kickstarter Money Taxable? by Chris Castle]

Approaching Music Journalists
By Rick Goetz -- Part of being a DIY artist is marketing yourself like an entrepreneur or small business owner: You're presenting the brand of "You, Inc.," comprised of all the unique things about your music and you as an artist. And while putting some tracks up on social media platforms like Facebook and Myspace or on your own website is an important part of your larger portfolio of marketing tactics, you can't just leave it at that and hope that someone will eventually stumble across you.
Un-Cover-ing
By Harrison J. Reynolds -- The cover (recording) is an interesting creature. ... a recorded song has two copyrightable components - the recorded performance, and the composition itself (the music and lyrics). ... When someone wants to cover a song that was written by someone else, current copyright law calls for a small payment to be made to whoever owns the composition copyright each time a new copy of the song recording is (distributed.) ... You'll notice that the rule "don't do a bad job" isn't included among the list (of things cover artists must do) ... much to my lament ... [Thanks to Terry Hart for the link.]
Sheet Music Goes Digital on iPhone, iPad
By Scott Steinberg -- New free iPhone, iPad and iPod touch app iSheetMusic hopes to revolutionize the way artists access and view sheet music by optimizing it for on-demand purchase and portable screening via mobile devices. Now available for download via Apple's App Store, over 10,000 songs can presently be accessed virtually anytime, anywhere, with 30-40,000 total compositions expected to be available by year-end. [Thanks to Lauren Iossa for the link.]
7 Ways to Bring Back the Physical Album Experience in Digital Music
By Chris Bracco -- Despite what some industry folks may tell you, there are still tons of music fans out there that prefer the experience that a physical music item can provide. I am one of them. Believe it or not, there are ways that artists can bring some of the physical album experience to digital music. Some of it is common sense, and some of it takes a little "out of the box" thinking, but it is indeed possible.
Songpier Turns Any Song Into An App For Free
