Drawing Announcement, Saturday, Sept 4.
(You must be a current DSA member to enter.)

About the show
(http://tickets.attpac.org/single/psDetail.aspx?psn=7872):
During this unforgettable evening, T Bone Burnett will explore the finely hewn craft of matching music to image and share his recollections from working with artists from B.B. King to the Coen brothers. Burnett will show clips from films he's been involved in, as well as his favorite movie musical moments from other great films that have influenced his work.
T Bone Burnett initially made his mark as a recording artist and highly sought-after producer for an array of artists including Roy Orbison and Elvis Costello. In addition to his Academy Award for Best Original Song for "The Weary Kind," the theme from Crazy Heart, Burnett has also worked as a composer, music supervisor and producer for films such O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Walk the Line, Across the Universe, and The Big Lebowski. October 2007 saw the release of the Grammy winning, Burnett-produced Raising Sand, a collaborative album featuring Alison Krauss and Robert Plant.

September 8 – THE BLUES (Jazz Roots) Winspear Opera House 7:30PM
Without the blues there is no jazz! And you’ve never had the blues like you’re going to have it on this night. Still in her 20s, Shemekia Copeland is considered the heir of soul-drenched divas like Etta James and Koko Taylor.
Joining her for this blues explosion is a living legend whose story makes him the definitive blues man. James Cotton was born in Mississippi in 1935 and as a boy worked the fields with his seven brothers and sisters. Orphaned at age nine, he was raised by his mentor, the legendary Sonny Boy Williamson, who taught him the innovative harmonica style that fuels Cotton’s hard-driving “Super Harp” band.

A Legend In His Own Time
The Smiles That Blossom From Vern Dailey Have Roots In Pain
For as long as most of his friends can remember, Vern Dailey has been “the legendary Vern Dailey.” It makes you wonder: How long does a legend get to be a legend? Vern has been one for decades now. Most of Vern’s legendary activities probably don’t show up when you Google him. Still, you get a lot of highlights when you key in this 80-year-old’s name.

2. DSA MEETINGS -

2ND TUESDAY MONTHLY MEETING - http://www.meetingblog.dallassongwriters.org

Our guest speaker on Sept 14th will be Ken Nelson, Senior VP/Executive Producer at FirstCom Music. Ken has over twenty years of experience in creating, producing, and licensing music catalogs. He has created and produced music catalogs for companies like ESPN, Ethan Allen, Rogers Sports Net, Universal, Discovery Networks, ABC, CBS, and the list goes on. To give you an idea of what Ken does, here's an example copied from FirstCom's website:

FirstCom scored the music to picture using early versions of the new animation supplied by Vivendi. Ken Nelson was the producer and executive producer of the sound track for the new logo: 'Vivendi Entertainment had a very clear idea of the image and sound they wanted. Unlike many traditional libraries, we had the expertise to take the actual animation roughs and score directly to those assets. This allowed us to try several different approaches and orchestral mixes until we were able to capture just the right mood.'

Nelson worked closely with Mark Kristol, Vivendi Entertainments Executive Vice President of Theatrical Marketing & Distribution, through several weeks of the post production process. 'It was an absolute pleasure working with Ken and his team. Ken was keenly adept at interpreting the sound concept we had in mind. He was able to offer us several variations on that theme which enabled us to succinctly determine the score that would most effectively contribute to establishing our new identity. '

The Directors feel that DSA can support a number of these small area Song Swaps which are beneficial to attaining crucial feedback for developing your works in progress and as Annie Benjamin pointed out, works best in small groups of 10 or less. If you live in a suburb and would like to host one in your area, please reply to the group and ask for interested attendees in your area. Three people make a group for peer review or interested co-writers. I know several people who have attended the Song Swap in the past have developed beneficial co-writing relationships.
Please email DSA or talk to a board member if you'd like to start one in your neighborhood.
